Kitty Flynn's

51 St Mary Street, Cardiff [map]

Kitty Flynn's - formerly Mulligans - may be flanked by Chippy Lane on one side and the swankery of the Brewery Quarter on the other. But it remains oblivious to either, its traditional Irish pub charms cowed by neither time nor fashion. Or, indeed, the ever-present lure of chips and a battered sausage.

The narrow interior doesn't really lend itself to sitting down. This is all about standing up and drinking. Perhaps until you can't stand up any more.

The clientele is comprised almost exclusively of middle-aged blokes - the only women you'll see in here are generally behind the bar.

But there's a proper pub atmosphere here and its location at the lower end of St Mary Street makes it a welcome respite from the cavernous meat factories on the other side of the road.
