Cafe Jazz

21 St Mary Street, Cardiff [map]

There can't be as many bars in Cardiff that we've walked past so frequently and yet have drunk in so rarely.

At last count, the ratio for this place was running at approximately 1,063:1.

We march in expectantly and are rewarded with a bar whose frontline is composed almost exclusively of lager.

We're warming to the place already.

It's fair to say that we haven't arrived during their core hours of business. Still, plenty of seating options.

As long as motorway service station-style vinyl-ensconced chairs are your thing, that is.

A-ha, another punter! And, in fact, the only other patron in the entire establishment.

She seems to be enjoying herself, though.

It's just not clear what this place is trying to do. Is it an all-day restaurant and bar? Is it a Ronnie Scott's-esque jazz club?

Or is it, as we strongly suspect, the headquarters of the Vinyl Seating Fetish Society (Cardiff Branch)?

It's part of the Sandringham Hotel, which is why there's a restaurant facility.
