The Ernest Willows
2-12 City Road, Roath [map]
It'd been a long day of boozing by the time we staggered into The Ernest Willows.
Despite the fact that it looks as if it's been directly transposed from the gloom-laden concrete vista of Slough that constitutes the opening credits of The Office, at times there's just something reassuring about a Wetherspoon.
You do, after all, know exactly what you're going to get.
Gleaming pumps primed to dispense cut-price lager have never stood so tall and proud.
Ah yes, the trademark Wetherspoon ambience we all know and love.
It's like being stuck in the departure lounge of a provincial airport at 4am, only without the promise of a week in the sun at the end of it.
Oh. The Photographer appears to have fallen off his stool. But, pro that he is, he's carried on shooting regardless.
Fortunately, no one seems to have noticed.

But what of the toilets? They're pretty swish for a Wetherspoon's bogs, almost Japanese - style minimalism at play.
And with the Western Mail sports pages perfectly positioned at eye-level, they may be the toilets of the future. Except the future would have the BBC Sport website on touchscreen computers - which could prove problematic whilst having a piss.
I've always wondered what the Ladies bogs are like...
We've been reliably informed that the ladies' bogs are amazing and so large that they have their own lounge area. Though quite why anyone would want to spend any time sitting on a sofa next to the loos remains to be seen.
My girlfriend has informed me the ladies has its own table with its own number, so you can get your meal delivered to the toilets if your that way inclined....
Just stumbled across your blog from the longlist....love the idea :)
I like to drink at Shot in the Dark right next to Ernest.
Anyway just thought I'd say hi

Hey Laura - haven't been to A Shot in the Dark yet. Will have to give it a go next time we do City Road.
Oh, and belatedly: a meal delivered to the loos? No thanks.
The ladies toilets are amazing, they remind me of the prefects toilets in Harry Potter.
